Sociology 432: Readings

Class reading will be taken from two books you need to purchase:
McAdam, Doug and David A. Snow (1997) Social Movements: Readings on Their Emergence, Mobilization, and Dynamics. Los Angeles, California: Roxbury. (An edited collection of important analyses of social movements)
Ferree, Myra Marx and Beth B. Hess (2000) Controversy and Coalition: The New Feminist Movement Across Four Decades of Change, Third Edition. New York: Routledge. (A case study of the history of the feminist movement in the United States since 1950.)

For specific assignments from these readings, see the schedule

We will also be viewing several films

For both the readings and the films, there are study questions you should look at in advance and be prepared to discuss in class (see class participation). For example, see the questions on Sidney Tarrow's analysis of cycles of protest.
